What do your hyperlinks look like?
In order to maintain consistency on the BALC site, we have set our site so that links either to our pages or someone elses are normally coloured green and bold. If you move your cursor over the link, the mosue cursor should change into a hand and the text below should change to black and appear underlined. Please note it is possible for you to specifically set the local conditions and responses to hyperlinks in your own browser.
What browsers do you support? What level of accessibility do you support?
Currently we support the following browsers fully: Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 or higher, Mozilla Firefox 1.0 or higher, Netscape 4.0 or higher, Opera 7.x or higher. We are working towards meeting wider accessibility requirements with regards to extending access to as many people as possible.
What format do you support for document and data downloads?
For the most part we use two file formats - PDF (Portable Document Format) and ZIP.PDF files are usually used for reading documents. They require a special
reading software. The software is called Adobe Reader,
it's free and you can download it by clicking here.
We choose PDF files for 3 reasons - 1 - the files are quite small and therefore
should be easier to download especially over a low speed internet connection. 2 -
the format is not easily altered or corrupted and therefore we hope it should be more resistant
to third parties interfering with its content. 3 - the PDF format is available for multiple operating systems. We review the validity of our assumptions on a regular basis based on feedback from our visitors.
ZIP files are a way of compressing files so that they are smaller and therefore
are more quickly downloaded. In order to open ZIP files, you will need Windows
Me or higher.
Although if you are using Windows Me or higher you should be able to open ZIP files without needing any additional software, we suggest that you use a special piece of software called Winzip for Windows users or Stuffit for Mac or Linux owners.
Both product provide a trial version and are modestly priced to keep afterwards if necessary.
